TYLER, TX- On Wednesday, May 14, a new City of Tyler Councilmember was sworn in. Shonda Marsh (District 3), newly elected Councilmember, took her oath of office.
Meet the elected official:
District 3 – Shonda Marsh is a lifelong resident of North Tyler with a deep-rooted commitment to public service, healthcare and community advocacy. She attended Mamie G. Griffin Elementary, Dogan Middle School and John Tyler High School, where she was a proud Brigadette. Enriched by her experiences in Girl Scouts, Top Teens of America and the National Honor Society, Marsh developed a strong foundation of discipline, leadership and civic pride early in life.
Marsh dedicated nearly 30 years to a career in respiratory therapy, providing care to patients during their most vulnerable moments, including the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. She holds both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Healthcare Administration and is currently pursuing her Doctorate in Health Administration.
Her passion for leadership is guided by what she calls her “why”: a personal commitment to serve with empathy, compassion, teamwork and collaboration. Marsh believes that Northwest Tyler is more than a district. It is a home, a history and a future worth preserving and advancing.
Her vision for District 3 is centered on three core pillars: community development, equitable access and economic empowerment. Marsh supports investing in infrastructure, housing and public spaces while maintaining the cultural and historical identity of the district. She is committed to ensuring residents have access to quality education, affordable healthcare and job training opportunities by working with schools, healthcare providers and community organizations. She also aims to support small businesses, foster innovation and bring new investments to the area.
District 3, one of the most historic areas in Tyler, holds stories of resilience, desegregation, faith and entrepreneurship. It is home to the city’s only HBCU and countless longstanding churches and small businesses that have shaped its identity. Marsh is dedicated to honoring this legacy while leading with transparency, integrity and collaboration.
“My promise is to serve as a voice for every resident of District 3,” Marsh said. “Together, we can ensure Northwest Tyler thrives—for us and for generations to come.”
In addition to the swearing-in of Councilmember Shonda Marsh, District 1 Councilmember Stuart Hene and District 5 Councilmember Lloyd Nichols were re-elected to continue serving their respective districts. Councilmember Nichols was also selected to serve as Mayor Pro Tem.
