Water line extension to improve pressure in northern Tyler

TYLER, TX- (City of Tyler) In a move to boost water pressure in the north and northeast area of Tyler, the City Council approved a $2.1 million construction contract with A.E. Shull and Company to build a 12-inch water line extension from Highway 271 to FM 14 and North Broadway Avenue.

This project will close a critical gap in the City’s water system. The water line along Highway 271 currently ends just south of Gentry Parkway. The new extension will continue north past Loop 323 before turning west to connect with an existing 16-inch water line on FM 14. Along North Broadway Avenue, multiple small and aging water mains will be replaced and connected, eliminating dead ends and strengthening the system.

“This is about building a stronger, more connected water network for Tyler residents,” said Utilities Director Kate Dietz, PE. “By looping these lines, we can provide more reliable service and better water quality.”

This project is outlined in TWU’s Water Distribution System Master Plan, which prioritizes projects that will keep the distribution system up to date while improving day-to-day service for the community.

The City Council approved an engineering services agreement for this project in June 2024. Since then, design work has included securing easements across 26 private properties, preparing for pavement repairs and coordinating with the Texas Department of Transportation for right-of-way access in select areas.

The upcoming construction contract will include the installation of more than 12,500 linear feet of 12-inch water line, steel casing under roadways, and site restoration with pavement repair and revegetation. The project is anticipated to begin this summer and will be completed within 8 months.
